The Desert Rose is a succulent native of South Africa. It resembles a rose tree and produces lovely pink blooms. how time flies and now it is October. the cat is always outside nowadays coz the weather is getting better. that's him hiding behind the pots where he sits and sometimes sleeps all day. he will only come back into the house when he is feeling hungry. last week i took him to the vet because his eyes were watery and it seems that he had an infection. he rans out when he sees me coming coz he does not want me to put eye drops on his eyes.

anyhow , the studio is busy preparing for the Christmas markets. I am not sure if i will be going to Handmade Canberra, but definitely i will be going to the one in the Blue Mountains. this will be my first time and i hope it will be lots of fun.

i made more of the sydneys beaches tote bag, only 6 pieces and some new pouches with zips.

old LP album covers

i found a box full of old LP albums in my husbands office. guess what ? i made a collage of the album covers and had a it framed. i could have a whole wall full but that is not possible. anyway, this is good enough and really looks great on the wall. there you go, don't throw away those old LP albums, if you make a nice collage of the covers, it can bring back memories.

what to do with metal zippers?. my sister gave me a plastic bag full of zippers about 2 years ago. she has this habit of buying stuff from ebay and later on she does not know what to make out of them. last week i thought that it is time to make a bag with a zipper closure soon. a week later after a lot of trial and error, about a yard and a half of fabric wasted, i finally made one! it may have a zip but there are no pockets inside and it is not lined. it is still a bag and that is all that matters.

as i was clearing the garage of unused stuff and cartons, i found these frames. what do you do with unwanted frames, do you throw them in the bin? oh no. you don't. i made chalkboards for the kitchen. all you do is paint the mdf backing with water based chalkboard paint. special chalkboard paints are available from any hardware or paint shop. Paint 2 coats, let it dry for 24 hours and off you go. if you don't want to use chalk, you can buy chalk markers that work like thick pens and you can erase them with a wet cloth. they are quite handy in the kitchen for writing your next list of groceries, special phone numbers or just about anything.
i am even thinking of painting a whole wall into a chalkboard art, if my boss will allow me. anyway, that is good enough for now.

keyring with leather

let me get back to the shop after my silly ironing art blog. i made some keyrings with leather and i stamped them with letters. first, i stamped them with the letters one at a time then dye them in beige, after that i burnished the leather to give it a good shine. because the leather is vegetable tanned, when i dye it in beige, it still has that natural color but just a bit darker. the leather will get better as you use it and even darker in color when it ages.

what is ironing art? the clothes that needs to be ironed! they are sitting on a nice piece of old chest in our tv room. now it has become art because the wall is empty. i have no place to put them clothes for ironing so this is the place!
the trunk was a gift to Andre's greatgrandmother for her wedding. in the old days, the story was,they filled the chest with linen as a wedding gift for their new life. it once had the natural color of wood but unfortunately , andre mistakenly painted the chest white one day.
the chest must be around a hundred years old. there you go, it is vintage and art.

once i have time to iron them clothes, the wall will be empty again.

a bit more plants

i would love to have more plants but i'm afraid that when i am away, no one will look after them.

after 2 months the veggies have grown.

i planted lavender in 3 pots and hopefully they will have beautiful flowers in the spring and summer.

the palm is from last year and so is the ficus. i also planted a big yucca that i got my sisters house. all the plants don't need so much water and if there is rain every now and then, i don't have to worry.

i got this succulent from my mother, this one also does not need much water.

Two weeks ago, i started to plant vegetables in pots and placed them on the spot where there is plenty of sunshine. i have rockets leaves, baby spinach, parsley, mint, lemon grass and pakchoi. they are growing well and maybe after 4 weeks i will be harvesting some rocket leaves.there you go, nothing much is happening really.

the cold winter is making me lazy to blog coz first of all my hp laptop is broken. the wifi does not work and sometimes it switches off by itself. time to get a new one , i guess. anyhow, that did'nt stop me from making a new bag. this time it is a tote bag with 2 leather straps which can be worn on the shoulder. it is the heavy duty cotton canvas tarp in olive drab and lined with my usual cotton ticking in green.i handprinted a few of the teardrops logo in black as well. i will be listing the bag soon on big cartel and etsy. i hope you like it.

we left at 5 am on saturday morning for canberra. as soon as we arrive at about 0830, we set up our tables, then by 10 the doors were open for Handmade Upmarket Canberra. we met some nice people, our neighbors were also nice and friendly.we brought a lot of cushions and bags, they were all handprinted. the canberra pillow was our bestseller. you can visit our big cartel shop for more cushions and bags. and of course, the cats!

sydney's beaches on black canvas. is'nt that lovely? i only manage to make 4, so whoever wants one then you better hurry to my stall as quickly as you can. i am so excited to be a part of Handmade Upmarket Canberra. in fact, i am getting to panic a bit. so far, i can only print 4 bags at a time coz it is not fun when i print more. besides my studio is small and i can't fill it up. i had to use my husbands study to dry some of the newly printed fabrics. screenprinting has to be done slowly and accurately then comes the stitching and then the hardware. it is nice to think that heyBoom bags are not only simple but there is so much attention to detail and functionality.that is what i love about handmade. see you in Canberra, just barely 2 weeks left, can't wait!

printing on burlap

i handprinted Sydney's beaches on black burlap with white ink. it is a lovely combination. as usual, i cut the letters by hand on A4 paper , 3 lines at a time. the names are not perfectly lined up but i think it is good enough, simply beautiful on my wall.
the small clay houses were made last year with leftover clay. i never had the chance to paint and glazed them so i will leave it like that for now. white is a great color for small spaces and one can never go wrong ,also as long as the decor is minimal.
the cabinet by the way looks naturally distressed, it was under water when our old house was flooded 3 years ago. it is a lovely salvaged furniture.

i will be bringing along with me a few handprinted black canvas bags with Sydneys beaches in white ink to canberra.
Just 2 weeks left until the Handmade designers Market in Canberra. i am so excited, can't wait!

artwork or whatever!

i don't know if you can call this an artwork. i have seen quite a few on the internet and they are printed on canvas, simply called destination canvas. anyhow, i found this big piece of plywood as we were moving our stuff to another villa. i thought it would make a really nice destination art or whatever you might call it. it took almost a week to cut out the stencil out of A4 paper, then screenprint them 3 -4 lines at a time on the plywood. it was not so easy to cut the stencils one letter at a time. anyhow i am quite pleased with my work and it does look great in my new living room.

the first batch of screenprinted bags are almost ready. i printed 5 with Sydney's beaches. with a bit of overtime work , they should be ready by wednesday. i will be printing the next ones by the weekend and hopefully i will be able to have at least a dozen ready by the end of april. this morning i was busy organizing the tiles for the villa, the guys removed the carpets upstairs and they will start tiling the floor tomorrow. we can probably move by the end of april soon as the painting is done as well.

under pressure

at the moment, i am under pressure to make as many bags as i can for the exhibition in june. starting last weekend, i was cutting fabrics and this week i will be screenprinting the designs , then maybe by the end of this week some of the bags are finished. hopefully, i should be able to send some to Sydney by the end of April. this is my life,sewing and sewing and sewing! haha!

the screens are here and i can't wait to try them, it will surely make handprinting more professional. but i still like my handcut stencils coz i like the idea of real handmade!

I am moving again after 5 years of living in a big house. It was alright when Christian was here, but now being alone all day in a big house that seems empty, it is not a nice place anymore. My new house is a small villa with 3 small bedrooms, a dining and living room all in one, and a small kitchen. At the moment, they are replacing the carpets with tiles and paint it all in white. hopefully, it will be ready by the end of April.
while waiting for the big move, i am putting away a lot of things that may be useless for me. i found fabric swatches that i got from a decor shop last year. i mailed a kg of swatches to monique and she can make clutches out of them. i am glad to give it away instead of throwing them in the bin.

fitflops or birkies?

i love my birkies. i have quite a few pairs and i wear them everyday because they are so comfortable. but when i was in Manila 2 weeks ago, my friends were wearing fitflops, so i bought a couple as well. they are quite good, just as comfy as birkies and they come in pretty colors like the fuchsia pink!. anyhow, they are both good on my feet. so which one?

while i was in sydney last month i screenprinted some burlap and made them into throw pillows. i like how the design turned out and suits the burlap. i gave the throw pillows to my friend who is an interior designer in Manila. she loved it.

a cat and a crocodile

the cat is from Steiff and the crocodile is from Sigikid. They are 2 famous stuff toy makers from Germany. I guess by now both factories have closed since China can always make toys like these nowadays. The cat is a gift from the Oma to Christian, 18 years ago and the crocodile is a gift from Andre to me, 25 years ago. When we moved our stuff to Australia, i just kept these 2 toys and gave everything else away to the red cross. it was a pity really but i don't want to keep many things that will only gather dust, i like to think that other kids may be able to play with them instead of keeping them all for nothing. one is enough!

i bought my used leather pouf from the salvation army shop for 8 dollars. i then made a cotton canvas cover , screenprinted the words i got you babe and xxx. looks good in my tv room.

the new cushions in canvas are now ready for listing on big cartel and etsy. they are 40x40 cms. in size and has a velcro closure. also available are 100% hypoallergenic fill of soft and fluffy ecofiber cushion inserts made from recycled plastic bottles.the words are handprinted in environmentally safe water based inks.both cushion covers and inserts are washable. more cool and inspiring word pillows will be out soon.

I will be away for 5 weeks. First stop will be Manila, to visit some friends. I will leave on Friday from muscat to Abu dhabi, a 3 hours wait at the airport! Boring! At least I have my iPad to keep me busy in the lounge. Then to Manila for a week. I will be in Sydney for 3 weeks. it's all about work this week before i leave for Sydney at the weekend. I was busy screenprinting and sewing some more new tote bags to take home. another sneak peak at my new designs.

the tote bags will only be in 2 colors, the natural and indigo blue cotton canvas. both fabrics are heavy duty and easily washable. they are lovely to print on and i just love how the printing turned out.

my classic favorite

i had been making the same bag for nearly 3 years and up to now, i still love making them. apart from a few other styles and colors, the all day bag as i call it , is still my beloved bag and all time favorite. and after 3 years, heyboomshop sold 281 bags to date.

well, i guess it is time for a change and you will find some of the new bags on etsy, dawanda and the new big cartel shop. i quite enjoy the new tote bags because i handprinted some simple words and designs on them and they looked really great. please go have a look and tell me what you think?

the unfinished mosaic

i left this project in june last year. last monday as i was cleaning the mosaic workshop room, i saw my unfinished mosaic, and all of a sudden i just wanted to work on it again. there you go the blue suit is almost done. i use the blue tiles that my friend Heleen left to me when she went back to Holland. thanks. Heleen. once it is done, i will not grout it so it will be light enough to put in my suitcase and take it to Australia.
i will try to finished this work before i go to Sydney next week.

disaster day!

if you ever want to do screenprintng, be sure you have a proper table prepared. if you have a table as chaotic as mine, look at that!

seems like the ironing board will soon be painted if i don't get myself organize. the bags are easy to print because they are precut but my first attempt at printing a meter of plain cotton fabric was a disaster. lesson number one: always prepare the table.

not to worry coz i am already thinking of making aprons out of these. just wait and see.

the owl sketch

here are some sketches of the owl which i want to make into an owl softie. i am having dificulty with the eyes because they looked cross-eyed to me. i want to have a happy owl face but the one which does not look like a cartoon face. when i put the eyes too high above the nose, the owl looks sad, when it is too close to the centre, he looks cross-eyed. i will have to work on this more and make it final soon. i can't wait to cut the stencil and screenprint the owl onto fabric and embroider the details.i have used 5 pages of my journal only for sketching the owl.

the butterfly is inspired by the work of mosaic artist, Irina Charny.

the gecko is inspired by the work of another mosaic artist, Sonia King.

Art is difficult especially when you want to make your work as perfect as these 2 projects. both projects will take a long time to finished, but believe me! once it is done, there will be so much satisfaction in what has been accomplished.

the toy doll suitcase [made in W. Germany]

The suitcase was owned by Andre's sister. She used to put her Doll, otherwise called "Puppe" in this case. that was 50 or more years ago. Christian found it in the cellar of his Grandma and he used to play with it when he was a small boy. Anyhow, I saw it in his bedroom when we were moving our stuff to Australia. I thought, what a pity if the suitcase will end up in the landfill! I had a few of the stitches repaired just so the suitcase will be strong enough for the next hundred years!

Then i removed the lining inside and replaced it with a new one.

Is'nt that pretty? vintage, shabby chic, beautiful , i just love it.

i made 2 cat softies this weekend, one in fuchsia pink and apple green in color. I have embroidered them with 3 different colored threads and they both looked really sweet. one is out now on Dawanda. More cats are on my Etsy shop too.

geckos at the workshop

2 geckos were finished at the workshop last week. they took about 10-12 hours of work, that means 6 weeks at 2 hours a week each time. they both turned out beautifully, the ladies really worked hard to make them like they wanted. both are made of ceramic tiles and some ready cut tiny mirrors.
please excuse my non-pro photography skills. i took the photo inside the living room and there was not enough light.

the new fabrics for heyboom this year

the new fabrics for heyboom this year is the heavy duty tarp quality cotton canvas. i have always wanted to use this fabric to make tote bags together with screenprinting. last year, i found the fabrics in a place in town where they make tents, camping shades and truck covers. this cotton canvas is real heavy duty, waterproof and really tough. i will be using the natural one which has the color of oatmeal. the natural canvas is unbleached and the printing inks takes it very well. it is also fully washable in the washing machine, and it is does not shrink much, maybe just 3% in the first wash. one of the things that i like in this canvas is the more you wash it , the color gets even better and looks vintage after awhile. the bag in the photo has been washed 4 times and there is no sign of shrinkage at all. the new bags will be out soon.

Nemo the cat

the cat sleeps on my couch all day. he only gets up when he is hungry, then as soon as he has had his meal, he goes back to sleep.

on the second photo, i tried to wake him up, he did raise his head and opened his eyes but after just a few seconds he went back to sleep again.

what a simple life, the cat has. and this one is one lucky cat.

handprinting the new bag

the new bag that will be out soon will have prints on them which are designed by me. it is quite a lot of work because i have to cut the stencils by hand with a sharp paper cutter. on this one, i cut the letters slowly one by one, then i put the stencil on the screen. once the design is ready for printing on the heavy duty cotton canvas, i put the paint on the screen and the design comes out nice and clean.
i use permaset inks from Australia, these are waterbased inks that are environmentally friendly. they do not contain PVC or toxic materials and very safe to use for kids clothes as well. the inks just washes off with water, no messy work.

hey, Sydney peeps, remember the shop called Gowings which used to be at the corner of Market and George Streets. in Sydney? i took my husband there for the first time in 1990, the year we were married. he bought some stuff there and like the shop very much. So every time we went to Sydney, he will never miss going there even just to browse around, he even kept the brown bag from 1990. I found the brown bag in our flat in Germany last year when we were putting away the things for our move to Sydney. I had it framed the other day, just to remind him of his favorite shop, the shop by the way, is now closed and is occupied by a garment shop. what a pity! and to end this short story, my husband bought 2 akubra hats from Gowings as well. the boys do go to Gowings for their akubras!

i found my favorite crunchy almond turron in the supermarket today. it is made of almonds covered in paper like wrapper. this one is imported from spain and is simply delicious.

then at the end of the row of shelves where they had chocolate and candy, i found mini marshmallows. this is what happens when it is cloudy and raining, i just stay at home, eat some junk and read a story from my ipad books. what a boring day.

there's the packet of mini marshmallows, i ate almost half of it. then i am off to my treadmill for a half hour walk. there goes my sunday!

mosaics of the month

here are 2 simple projects that were finished last week. i call them simple mosaics because the ladies who made them are not really very creative, i must say. but as you can see, they are good enough even if they are just as simple and as easy as sticking broken tiles on the board. that's why i love mosaics, because anybody can make one and it does not have to be so much work just break the tiles and stick them on as you like.

there were dark clouds all day today. it rained last night and early this morning. i did nothing but sewing and then i opened a facebook page for heyboom. it took hours to do it because i just did'nt know what to do. finally, i opened one but i don't know where to start. anyway, i left it for awhile until i am in the mood again.
at the moment i am making a tote bag which i am trying to finish. once this one is finished, i will then list them on my dawanda.

my dawanda shop is up and running again since 2 weeks. so far we have sold 3 of our ever popular all day bags (shown here in grey) and some of our clutch /purses. the clutch /purses are still on sale at 30 % off until stocks last. i will be making more clutch/purses in the future as i still have a lot of home decor fabrics in my cupboard. it is really busy, busy at my studio. at the moment i am concentrating on screenprinting some heavy duty oatmeal color canvas and make them up into tote bags . up to now, it is still not what i really want for a bag, so this will take a couple of weeks more until it is perfect.

at last, there is the photo of my backyard. you can see the high wall with the broken glass on top, to keep the bad people away! if i had the time in the world, i would really mosaic this wall! anyhow , those tiles are good enough just so i can divert my eyes to the tiles and plants and i will hardly notice the high walled fence.
i have also re-arrange my living room, and you can also see the view of the backyard from my living room. my sister said that it did'nt look so bad, but i think photos are sometimes deceiving, they looked good in pictures but not in reality. oh, well, at least it looks better than before.

i came back to muscat just over a week ago and i must admit that i had been lazy to blog about what's happening to heyBoom and myself. the flight back to muscat from sydney went rather quicker than i thought. afterall, i travelled twice last year and it seems to be shorter than 14 hours. anyhow, the mosaic ladies are back again since last week. they were all eager to get back to work on their projects after i was away for nearly 6 weeks.
my studio is a bit messy coz i have so many projects in mind that i try to do 2 things at the same time. the screenprinted bags are still not finished coz i am still testing them and making sure they are up to my standards. looks like there will be a delay now because i will be travelling again by the end of february. Somehow, i did manage to make a leather cover for my Ipad.
things are a bit slow because in between sewing and cutting stencils, i try to clear up the big mess that the landlord has done to our house. they built a high fence at the back of the building and now it looks horrible when you look out from the living room. they destroyed the plants with the concrete and paint. of course this people who work are no pros, so what do you expect. anyhow, i tried to fix the back garden by putting new potted plants and removed the damage ones.
in the next few days, i will be working on the new projects but i am a bit slow, blame it on the weather, i guess.
if i am in the mood tomorrow, i might take a photo of the back wall behind the house, of course after i tried to make it look better, although it really looks scrappy!

new year is just around the corner

time flies so fast when my days in sydney are numbered. just a week left until we go back to muscat again. ok, christmas is over and now comes the new year. it was busy during the days leading up to christmas, it is always exciting to go shopping for presents and just about anything, sometimes even useless stuff. i did'nt shop much because i gave my nephews and nieces money isntead, so that was easy. i ask santa for an apple ipad this year, i bought it a week before christmas just in case it will be out of stock . i also got a bargain coz the shop gave 50 dollars discount. anyway, it was ipad time until christmas and up to now. i am enjoying this small toy, although it is not really a necessity but nice to have one.
in between my ipad moments, i made a journal out of recycled paper and covered it with a kind of natural kraft fabric paper that i ordered from a shop on etsy. i draw my designs on this journal and also screenprinting ideas. the journal is sewn onto the cover with linen thread. it is very easy to make and looks really good.
anyway, that will be all for 2010.

it's been almost 4 weeks since i arrived in Sydney but was very lazy to blog on what is happening. anyway, here i am! my 2 sisters and i are going to the one of the markets to sell some stuff. before that i went to a few markets to see what they were like. one of my favorites is the finders keepers which had both designers and artisans who had great stuff. the other markets were a bit boring for me coz i find that sellers don't really make an effort to sell nice handmade . when i say nice handmade they should be unique and carefully made to last.
so in my search for a good handmade and i am into screenprinting as well, i made some cat softies, screenprinted the front body and embroidered.
i truly enjoyed making the cats, in fact i don't want to sell them. i would rather give them away but anyhow we'll see if they sell then the giving away follows.

off to Sydney

i am off to Sydney, Australia tomorrow morning. then as soon as i arrived there, i will take a couple of hours rest and i will be joining my family for a big celebration, my mother's 80th birthday. i am so excited but on the other hand, i dread the long flight which will take 14 hours apart from the 3 hours wait at Abu Dhabi airport. anyway, it will all be worth it coz i will be seeing my family and of course, my son who i have not seen for 7 weeks. i really missed him!
i have a lot of ideas in mind that i want to do while in Oz, screenprinting will be on top of the list. i will be sourcing some good linen/cotton fabrics and eco friendly fabric inks for the prints. can't wait! here's my black armani t-shirt that i have printed with tall buildings, just one of my design ideas that needs to be improved.
the next posting will be from Sydney as soon as i have recovered from the jet lag!

a trip to the sand dunes

5 days off work is quite a lot for Mr. Wolf. The first 2 days, we found ourselves doing nothing but be in front of our computers. If i was not cutting paper, i was then surfing the net for ideas. andre was doing his bit on his new laptop which does not seem to work as he wants it to. anyhow, on the 3rd day, we went for a 2 and 1/2 hour drive to the sand dunes. it's really amazing how nature made it this way. after 2 hours drive we saw the dunes in front of us. we drove inside the area, being careful not to get stucked in the sand,that's when you don't know how to drive a 4 wheeler! anyhow, we stopped for lunch under a big tree and sat there for a couple of hours. the weather was great although the wind kept blowing the sand towards us. our friends went up for a walk but i stayed coz i don't like the sand blowing on my face! that was our day trip, we saw sand dunes, goats, camels , a few trees and the big desert surrounding.

yesterday i went to a place called wadi kabir. and in this place you will find shops that sell car accessories like seat covers and other stuff that are rather useless for the car. anyway, they also sell heavy duty canvas, they make them into tents. as camping is quite a popular thing here in oman, a lot of people have their huge tents and shades made out of these heavy duty canvas. anyhow, i bought some and went home to start playing with the fabric. here's the first try, beautiful, isn't it. i love this color. i even wash it in the washing machine for a quick 30 minutes and it did'nt shrink much, it even made the fabric softer to work with. i cut three sets of stencils. i am quite good at cutting now, so it did'nt take very long and besides the pattern is quite simple. i find the fabric inks very dry and i am not too happy with it. nevertheless, it was a good try and the design in 3 colors came out just the way i want it. very pretty!

today i printed the logo in fuchsia pink on the shirt, apron and bag. i did it very well, it is almost perfect, no paint smudges and the print is flat and clean.

last week, i found a screenprinting shop here in Muscat. they had fabric inks which are environmentally friendly, so to speak. i bought white because i like the way white looks on dark fabric. so here is my first attempt. i cut the stencil first with a sharp paper knife which i got from germany. of course, this takes time but i don't mind coz i just love cutting paper. then i lay the paper on the screen then put the ink and with my squeegee, the pattern is transfered to the fabric. this was how it turned out, not perfect. so, next time i know what to do. the ink was very thick and i have to add abit of water next time.
now, back to paper cutting for more practice.

guess what? andre gave me a box of golf balls for my birthday. now i have a full bag of different brands and i have'nt even played for nearly a year. i have to try playing in sydney when i go there in 2 weeks time. lately, i went to the driving range and tried to practice so i can get back to the game soon. anyway, it was nice to get golf balls, better than nothing, at least he remembered my birthday though i don't think much about it anymore. i just want to go back to sydney and spend some time with my brothers and sisters and of course, my dear mother.

have you notice our new heyboom logo? after 3 years, it was time to pay someone to make a logo for me. The logo came all the way from Melbourne, Australia. Chantal is a friend of my sister who is a graphic designer. last week she offered to make a logo for Monique and since Monique already has one, I thought why not one for me. at first, she gave me a few designs that were rather too old fashioned and the colors were too dark. i told her what i wanted and this is what she came up with. i love the teardrops flower and i am now screenprinting them on some new tote bags that i am going to make soon. lovely, is'nt it? watch out for my new tote bags with screenprrinting and the pretty fuchsia pink flower on them.

yesterday i handprinted a couple of plain cream cotton fabrics and made a handbag. i used a 12 inch screen and an 8 inch squeegee. the stripes are from ikea and the purple dots and apple green flowers are handprinted by me. i am not an expert yet, it takes time to really make it perfect. cutting out the pattern is the difficult part because i have to cut out a lot of the design onto an A4 size paper. i can only print 3 to 4 times by using the same pattern otherwise the paper is already soaked in ink. the size of the bag is 12x12, just a handbag with leather handles.

i think this gecko is pretty wild when it comes to color. what was she thinking? just throw a color, whichever comes to mind? one thing that i particularly like about mosaics is thatwhen it comes to color, you can throw in any color you like and still it turns out great. this gecko will look good on a white wall or even green just like my table cover. every person is different, and one's work also reflects their personality or maybe that is just the way they look at art, very colorful!
our mosaic workshop is back and we have a few new ladies. some of them have not done mosaics before or done any form of arts and craft, so we are in for a lot of surprises on what they will come up with once they finish a project.

the bag in sage green is our bestseller so far. it is quite a unique color with a mix of grey and light green. the other colors for this bag are also selling well but not as much as this one.in my shop this bag is called the all day bag. that will soon change because i think i will just call the bag by color since we already know that the bag can be for everyday, all day, any day!

my sister gave me this bag coz she did'nt like the straps . i removed the long straps and replace it with leather and double cap rivets. it's amazing how leather can change the look of the bag. The rivets even made it look better. The fabric is from the famous Laurel Burch cats. Love this BAG!

I am back in Muscat again after 4 months away. Dawanda is back in business and I sold just one bag so far since i opened the shop. I tried screenprinting the other day and screenprinted 10 tote bags . here's one that i finished stitching this morning. I like the size and the big bag print.A nice bag to take for shopping and not have to carry a plastic bag around or bags with shop names on them. I am finishing the rest of the bags slowly in between painting some ceramic pieces that i want to fire soon. I think i like screenprinting. it is so easy , the difficult part is when i have to cut out the design. There are more projects in mind and i will slowly make them as i have so much time now.

this one is my office, it is the walk-in wardrobe of the masters bedroom. we decided to make the masters bedroom into our tv room. it is nice to have a tv room where we can watch tv and be away from the living room area, especially when you have visitors. i have a big family and when any of my brothers or sisters come in to visit, their kids need a room to watch tv while we adults are chatting away in the living area. the area is about 3 meters x 2 meters, very cozy, and i have decorated it with some of the cloth dolls that i made some 10 years ago. the cabinets are from Flototto in Germany, we brought them over.

our sofa is from king furniture, i chose the Jasper which is quite big and is just right for the size of the room. it is made of corduroy fabric in sort of dark chocolate, i like the color coz it is earthy and it goes with the rest of the other furniture in the room.
the whole apartment is now fully furnished and it is time for me to go back to Oman. i am pleased that we have shipped the furniture to sydney, although that was very stressful but worth it. otherwise, i would have been scouting for furniiture to furnish the place and that will take a long time.

on one side of the living room is the huge cabinet also called armoire. it is made of teak from india and very heavy. the old door on the right is from Oman, it is an authentic door also made of teak. apparently the doors were small in the old days and people had to put their heads down in order to be able to pass through it. this door was removed from an old Omani house and given to us.
you will also find 2 omani pots that i have mosaic using wall tiles. the old chest which is in between the pots is made of teakwood and comes from the town of Sur.

the dining room which is right next to the kitchen has enough space for the table that is made of jackfruit timber from india, we brought this from oman. the table was made by Majlis Gallery a local furniture shop some 15 years ago. it is quite a solid table, sadly there was some chip to the legs when it arrived here. nevertheless, it is still ok and looks really old and rustic, just the way i want it to be. the dining chairs are from Ikea in Dubai,it looks great as a contrast to the old table .the black leather high chairs are from Calligari. the destination canvas on the wall was digitally printed, it has the street where we live in muscat and onwards to Turtle Beach, a famous tourist destination.
the huge cabinet on the right used to be our tv cabinet in oman. we had it cut down to size so we can use it for our dinnerware. that is the heaviest furniture that we brought over here.

at last our move to sydney is almost complete, it was very stressful and expensive. anyway, nearly everything is in place and once i am done here, i will be going back to muscat. our apartment is the one on the first floor on the right hand corner. i have a few plants there now and the terrace furniture. i will take some photos soon and show you how it looks like inside our sydney home.

what is winter like in sydney

we had been here is sydney for almost 3 weeks. it is winter and it feels really cold for me, temperatures are 15-18 at daytime and somewhere around 10-12 during the night. but i still find this cold since i am used to the warm weather in muscat. anyway, the sun was out last week and i went with my sister to the botanical garden hoping that we can photograph some rare australian flowers and plants. there was not much to see except trees lined along the field and very few flowering plants. winter of course!
here are a few photos, i photograph this fuchsia pink flowers and i also found a mosaic sign.
nothing much to report about this place, the cold weather is very uncomforatble for me, maybe after a few more weeks i should get used to it.

graduation day!

yesterday was graduation day. The class of 2010 from the American British Academy looked great in their blue robes. It was a very special day for everyone and a day that i looked forward to, since it happens only once in a lifetime. After the ceremony, there was a dinner reception at the Hyatt and it was great to see all the parents and graduates congratulating each other. it was sad to see the teachers and parents for the last time although some will still be around. everyone had a great time and of course, happy to see their children grown up and ready for the real life away from Oman.

since i will be closing the heyboomshop on dawanda soon, i have stopped sewing. then i found some leftover clay that was slowly getting hard and will soon be thrown away. guess what? i made clay houses. the red clay houses are for hanging on the wall, they are about 6-7 inches tall, hollow and have a hole in the back for hanging. the mini houses are 2-2 1/2 inches tall, half inch thick and are just meant for decoartion. they can also be useful for mosaics, terrarium, aqauriums or just let them sit where you can see something cute. they are not bisque fired yet, and when they are ready , i will paint and glaze them. and maybe sell them! will i ever have time to do all these? maybe!

a key hanger in smalti

when i went to Ravenna,Italy for a mosaic workshop, we used mostly smalti for our projects. smalti is made of glass and comes from Italy. it makes beautiful mosaics because there is so much colors to choose from. they are quite expensive, i bought a color mix for 1 kg and that cost me about 20 euro. the keyhanger is about 20 x 25 cm. the background are little pebbles. if you look closely, you will see 5 brass hooks to hang the keys.

Five years ago i wanted to make a side table for christian's bedroom. and so i cut this little guy out of thick plywood and painted him in blue and white. anyway, five years later i still did'nt finish painting him but last year i thought of mosaiking him instead so he can be more solid. so here he is in his pajamas. he has 2 sides and 2 different colors. he turned out really great and i am very pleased with him. he is carrying a black and white oval tray where one can actually put some drinks or a glass of milk! this little mosaic guy will be on his way to Sydney soon.

heyboomshop is having a sale, 10% off everything until May 24. i will be closing the shop for 3 months because i have to go with my son to Australia. He is graduating from Grade 12 on May 27 and he will go to university in Sydney. I will help him settle into our apartment there but he will not be able to start school in July. Meanwhile, he will live there and see what life is like after living and growing up in Oman for 17 years. I am pretty sure he will love Sydney becoz there is so much to do unlike in Muscat. He can only start school in March next year.
We have an apartment in Sydney and so we moved some of our stuff from Muscat coz it is empty. i am looking forward to decorating and living there even only for the holidays.
By the way, Muscat weather is humid and a soaring 40 degrees C but my garden is full of flowers. of course, we have to water the plants a lot!

silver from Oman

my brain was not working much this past week and so i was not blogging at all. but anyway, here i am again. two weeks ago, i saw a friend of mine wearing a necklace with pendant in the shape of a hand that looked like henna pattern was carve on it. it is made of silver and they call these Fatma's hand. they come in many sizes and different carvings which is supposed to be a hand with henna prints on them. i like it so much that i bought 4 pieces and i attached it to my bracelet. as you know , oman is famous for silver, they said that silver is quite cheap here. i am not really a jewelry person but i just happen to like the Fatma's hand and so i bought it. I am not even sure if i had a good bargain since i don't buy silver very often. all the same , i find it quite unique to wear. all 4 pieces cost 60 Australian dollars.

by the way, my son who is in grade 12 is now off school. the exams for IB will start on Monday and he is studying hard, i hope so. i am trying to be a supportive mom by making sure that he eats well and that he is not under so much stress. Even if he annoys me sometimes, i try to be really nice to him by not screaming too much! after the exams, i will be screaming at him again! joke only! big boys , they never listen to their moms!

internet was a bit slow this past week and i did'nt have enough patience to upload or blog as it takes quite some time, i hate waiting. anyway, this flowering plant is a tree, quite a big tree when it gets older. at the moment it is only about 3 meters high and i guess after the summer it will even be taller. the tree is covered with flowers at this time of year.

i don't know exactly what these ones are called but i my friend called them creepers, like creepy crawlies maybe. it is crawling all over the front wrought iron fence and when we don't cut them they will probably be covering the whole carport. the flowers are lovely and smells sweet during the night.

yesterday, i took close-up photos of the flowers in my garden, here are some of them. the crown of thorns as they call this pretty red flowers have 3 different sizes. the smallest one has flowers with the size of about 1 cm. and the large ones are about 3 cms. these plant is a succulent and the flowers bloom in the summer heat. this plants are also called Euphorbias,most species are very cactus like and almost all euphorbias have milky sap in their stems and leaves which run freely when scratched or cut.This milky sap is caustic to sensitive skin or eyes so be careful when handling them.

let me show you the flowers in my garden. the desert rose are all blooming with lots of flowers and so are the lady of the night, crown of thorns, suntan. i don't know the names of the other ones but they are all so beautiful. in spite of the heat, they are all flowering nicely. even the aloe vera is blooming and the little birds are eating the flowers, it is so lovely to watch the birds every morning. our cat Nemo loves to listen to the sound of the birds when they are perch on the stems of the aloe vera flowers.

the school is off for a week but i am off for 2 weeks. i had been busy cleaning and preparing the things that we are moving to OZ. they have to be ready for the movers right after graduation which is on the 27th of May. There was so much junk in the attic and i had to throw a lot of things that were useless for us now. Everything must be clean and free of dirt and soil because Australia is very strict when we bring in things from overseas.
when i was not putting away stuff, i made the new clutch/purse with metal frames. everyday, i made at least one and i am slowly listing them on dawanda.

we now have the airconditioning on 24/7 as it is really getting hot inside the house.

a boring weekend!

i must say the weekend was pretty boring. as usual we all stayed at home and each one was in front of the computer. Christian was playing football, andre was downloading the usual music stuff and i was trying to make a website with wix. up to now, i can't seem to work out how the website should be and so i gave up. last night, i watched tv instead, there was this film with Cameron Diaz entitled "in her shoes" and i quite enjoyed it. i also watched "2012" and it was very entertaining. that was my weekend, i think it was boring enough that i was able to watch 2 movies which i very seldom have time for. by the way, as we drove to town for andres weekend shopping, i took some photos and i think this one looks great. gone are the days when there was no traffic at the weekend.

the week went by and i still can't find inspiration for a new bag that i have in mind. i manage to make a clutch bag for me. from andre's old jeans, i cut out the fabric and stamped it all over with words that i described my shop. it turned out really great and i just love using this bag. the frame is 8 inches and the bag is about 9x5 inches. apart from sitting in my studio and trying to find new ideas, the mosaic workshops are still on , 3 mornings a week. thank god! that keeps me busy otherwise i will probably end up sleeping and doing nothing at all. my creativity is gone lately, there is just no inspiration at all. it must be something to do with the weather change. while the rest of the world is having spring, over here in oman , it is like summer already , in the last few days the temperatures went up to almost 38 degrees! our airconditing is running 24/7! i have'nt done any exercise or sports since the beginning of the year so i think it is time to hit the treadmill soon.

it took almost 6 months to finished the city landscape by donna. she started with the black tiles for the buildings and cutting the tiles in about 1 cm size was not so easy. since she can only work on it for 2 hours every week, it took quite a long time to see it finally finished. the moon are small pebbles and the grout is in grey. quite some work there and a beautiful outcome.

last week was the polymer clay tutorial, today was having fun with red terracotta clay. i made some pretty ponytail holders in the shape of a flower and a handbag. they are pretty small, just about an inch in size. i always enjoy making stuff with clay but nowadays i don't have enough time because i have to make the bags. i need to spend at least the whole afternoon just for making stuff. this one took about 2 hours to finished and that is not even much and i enjoyed it a lot.

my friend Heleen finished another gecko mosaic this morning, this one took about 8 weeks to finished. i am naming this the tuxedo gecko!

this lady makes great tutorials and this one about clay is awesome. i made small polymer clay gift tags.

so i went looking for my box of Sculpey, i thought that i have thrown them away when i did some clean-up in my studio. after a few hours of searching, i finally found it in one of the cupboards downstairs next to my handmade soaps!

i then shaped a cookie heart cutter into a bag. i cut out the shapes from the sculpey clay and stamped them using my letter punch set which by the way, has been sitting in the drawer for 2 years because i did'nt know what projects to make out of it. i painted the letters in gold and then wiped it off, the tags looked old now and a bit messy. it needs a bit of improvement but sometimes mistakes look great!

btw, that was how i made myself useful at the weekend, playing around with tutorials!

Today the naughty cat did a lot of silly things. First he poohed on the floor. I know why he did such a thing, it is because he was fed too late. Friday is our weekend here so it means instead of the usual 6 am feed time, it will be later at 9. as i got out of bed he was already waiting at the bedroom door, then he jump at me trying to get my attention.
Later in the afternoon as i was watching tv, he scratched the couch because he did'nt get any lunch and it was already around 3 pm. Sometimes we just forget that there is this little creature in our house who is always hungry and also wants a little bit of attention from us. When he is not eating or drinking, he sleeps.
last night , i tried to takes photos of him but he kept turning away, he was very annoyed. But i did manage a good one and here it is.
